Part One of the Veggie Series showing you how to lose weight and get healthy just by eating more vegetables!! From Douglasville Personal Trainer, Dave Hansey

Ok, there is a great low calorie food that you can eat in almost limitless amounts and not worry about how much you are eating and how big was that portion and how many calories does this have anyway……THESE ARE CALLED VEGETABLES.
Most of us do not eat enough of them or we load them down with fats, butter – even deep fry them. But vegetables in their natural form are amazing for you. Whether you are trying to lose weight, control your blood pressure, help your diabetes, prevent cancer or heart disease or just to live longer and healthier – vegetables are a major key that people forget.
CALORIES – Vegetables have very little calories until you load them with toppings. Here are some examples:
-	Raw Baby Carrots – 12 of them – 48 calories
- Green Beans – 1 cup cooked– 41 calories
-	Asparagus – 10 small spears – 20 calories
Eating more vegetables will help to naturally reduce the calories you put in your body. Reduce your use of sauces and learn how to prepare veggies. Most veggies taste better fresh or frozen than they do canned. And veggies you have hated forever may just need to be better prepared. Nothing tastes good boiled to death so learn to steam and prepare them differently and you will start to LOVE THEM!!

I love to look through cookbooks and find great recipes using fresh food that are also delicious. And while I think it is important for adults to learn and try new foods and learn to find fruits and vegetables that they can love. I realize as a parent that it is very difficult to get a child to sometimes eat vegetables. And when they do, it is hard for them to learn to like the healthy ones.

So when I saw this cookbook, I thought it was worth a try. And it is actually very cool. The idea is to make puree from vegetables and fruit and then you use them in the recipe so it is never actually something that is obviously in there. For example, there is chocolate pudding with avocado puree — don’t freak out — it is actually MIND BLOWING good pudding. Now remember, kids can’t live on chocolate pudding and macaroni, even with some puree.

So give it a try, there are some great recipes in her for kid friendly food — they take a bit longer but I totally think it is worth it – I mean it isn’t even $20 !!

INSTEAD OF EATING: A Cinnabon (810 calories)

You could have eaten a turkey sandwich on 2 slices of whole wheat bread with cheese, a cup of tomato soup, 2 plums, a garden salad with 2 tbsp fat free dressing and a small sliced tomato and 1/2 sliced cucumber.

OH MY look LUNCH AND HALF YOUR DINNER!!!!! Or some greasy sweet roll that has to last you HALF A DAY and has 5 grams of trans fat (not to mention the 32 grams of total fat and more than 100 carbs!!) Skip it and get real about fueling your body

To all my personal training clients and friends here in Douglasville, I sincerely hopes this helps you find a better path to healthy eating and weight loss.

Ok – starting a new feature this week that you will see regularly. I am calling it EAT THIS NOT THAT. I will show ONE THING that you can SKIP EATING and all the healthy things you could have eaten instead. My intention is for this to be a wake up call and also to point out HOW MANY calories are actually in some things. I know lots of my personal training clients here in Douglasville are always looking for better ways to eat so I hope this helps anyone who is looking to lose weight or get healthy!!

So for today — let’s start with breakfast

INSTEAD OF EATING THAT: Dunkin Donuts Sausage Egg and Cheese Croissant (690 calories)

You could have had THIS: Egg beaters (3/4 cup equiv of 3 eggs), turkey sausages (3 links), 2 slices rye toast with 2 tsp butter, an apple, an orange, a non-fat yogurt

See the point — LOOK AT ALL THAT FOOD — That is a full breakfast and a couple of snacks!!!! OH and you still save yourself the 7 grams of trans fat and have a nowhere near the 51 grams of total fat that croissant has.
